Recommend using sakis3g as the connection manager - http://www.sakis3g.org

sakis3g on ubuntu 12.X segmentation faults on old acer aspire 5135 with Atheros wlan card. If it works for you need to select More options first and then switch modem only, then connect 3g and you'll probably find that the modem is on Interface #4 (multi architectures have been).

sakis3g on ubuntu 10.04 - stable and Interface #4 (probably), generally if you need to switch modem, on 10.04 you only need to do it once and you only need to select the interface once and setup the PIN once, etc.

Basically cannot recommend sakis3g on > 10.04 (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zenity/+bug/973361)
